Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you?
You can find us at Shop 7, 332 Darling St, Balmain.
We are hidden away at the back of the arcade in the Institute Building. You can come in through the main entrance or the side alley way with the fairy lights.
What are your opening hours?
We are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8:30am-3:30pm.
Why are you only open three days a week?
Janelle does all the baking in house - it’s a one woman show and she needs some time to recover and spend time with her three little ratbags and old mate.
Who is Janelle?
Janelle hails from New Zealand but has called Balmain home for the last 16 years. Her love of baking comes from her Nanna and Aunites who always had a sweet treat on hand to scoff down.
You may of seen her working in places like Zumbo, Flour and Stone and The Happen Store.
She loves colour and prints, she loves to craft and loves to go for a swim early on a Sunday morning. She’s the first one to wake but also the last one on the dance floor. She may faint if Daryl Braithwaite were to walk through the doors of Sandy.
Who is Sandy?
Sandy was Janelles’ mother. Her favourite flower was a pansy. She was a mother of four and a hard working nurse who loved a good op shop.
Why don’t you make barista coffee?
We would rather have extra bench space to make all the cakes and treats!
We do have filter coffee from Little Marionette, teas from Rabbit Hole and sodas from Strangelove.
If you would like to bring in a flat white please do, we can even give you a mug to take to one of the local baristas. We love to get our coffee from The Little Marionette, Shila or Le Cafeier aka Oscars.
What do you bake?
We mostly make sweet treats such as cakes, slices and biscuits. However, we do make cheese scones and focaccia which is usually coming out of the oven when we open.
How do I order a cake?
Best to order your cake online at least a few days ahead.
If you miss out you might be lucky as we always try to have extras on the day.
Feel free to email us at hello@sandybakeshop.com.au
What time will my cake be ready?
Orders can be collected between 10am -3pm. If you need your cake outside these hours please email hello@sandybakeshop.com.au, we maybe able to accomodate your request.
Do you customise cakes?
No, we don’t make custom makes.
We don’t do writing on cakes, but we do have beautiful candles you can purchase in store.
How long will my cake last?
Most of our cakes are best eaten on the day of purchase, however there are some that can last for a next day party, please contact us if something is required
What if I need to cancel or change my order?
Check your order carefully before proceeding to the final payment. When placing your order ensure you choose exactly the right date. If you request Friday pick up and turn up on Thursday, there won’t be cake for you! If you request a Friday pick up but you really meant the Saturday, then the cake will have been decorated on Friday and thus, a day old.
If your cake celebration gets cancelled, we need at least 24 hours notice so you can be given a cake credit. This credit is valid for ONLY 8 weeks after. So pop it in your calendar!
If no notice is given for a cake cancellation, the cake is considered forfeited and we are unable to offer a credit. So, pop those cake dates in your calendar. x
